From R Newbold and Ralph Lauren shirts to adidas trainers and 6876 jackets our man in the wardrobe chooses his all time fave fashion buys.
The Sonora jacket
6876’s Sonora jacket from 2008, I’ve been buying this label since it first emerged and it’s always top notch, my favourite 6876 jacket is probably the Capandula, but this is a real stand out coat one of just 60 produced aswell and fully waterproof. I’m never afraid of a bit of colour, which is just as well, this is really bright in the flesh but cool as fuck.
The Bergaus Trango
Vintage Berghaus Trango (Alpine Extrem) this is the original version which were re-released last year. Living up north in an area famous for rain I’m always partial to a nice functional outdoor jacket. You can’t get much better than the old Berghaus Goretex stuff, as worn by Bonington and the like on far flung expedititions, this is one of their most famous models.
The Bucket Hat
One True Saxon tweed bucket hat, I like a nice hat, always have, I’ve had this one four times over in various styles and colours, which is odd as I couldn’t find them at all when they were originally released. I kept this one and it’s been everywhere with me over about eight years, I’m not too keen on OTS now and the way it went, but from the off it was actually a cool label (see Garbstore now).
The Indoor Super
Adidas Indoor Super, I don’t really bother with trainers at all these days, and sold pretty much every pair I had bar two or three. I’ve always worn shoes equally, but did have a large selection of trainers during my more care free days going to the football. I kept these as I think they are one of the best pairs Adidas ever did. They’ve not actually been on my feet since I saw my team win at Wembley in 2008 at the fifth time of asking.
The D Trek
Clarks D Trek, I’m a long time admirer of Clarks, they’ve been on my feet since I was a toddler, I picked these as I must have had about a dozen pairs of this model and they never date, they look good with anything, I managed a massive stockroom in a shoe shop and wore D Treks to work on a daily basis, I’ve had this sand leather pair which you won’t see too often for about nine years and they are still going strong.
The Powder Blue Parke
Engineered Garments mountain parka in powder blue poplin, based on the original old school US 60/40 parkas this is a really versatile coat which I’ll wear all year round, plus it’s a really nice colour.
The Yachting Coat
Faconnable yachting coat by Albert Goldberg, I call this my technicolour dreamcoat, and it is rather amazing too. I’ve only ever seen these come up three times, and each time I bought them all, I’ve got two in different shades, this one I’ve never seen before or since. I don’t really know much about Albert Goldberg other than he wasn’t afraid of a bit of colour. It’s certainly not one for every day wear, just for the odd occasion.
The Hunting Jacket
Stansfield hunting jacket, this is one of my favourite items, (Dominic) Stansfield is a really cool label, he does some great traditional items with a twist, this is kind of a combination of several different things, workwear, hunting, it has it all, Prince of Wales lining, ticket pocket, pen pocket, cowl collar, and it looks a bit like something a trendy Geography teacher might wear, it’s another all year rounder too, layered up, or on it’s own it looks smart.
The Jacoform 360
Jacoform 360 in ‘perforated walnut’, these are a classic moccasin from a cult Danish brand developed in the 60’s by Professor Jurgen Keller, these are pretty much special/orthopedic shoes, but in a good way. The Oi Polloi chaps said wearing them makes you feel like Shaggy from Scooby Do, and I can’t argue with that one!
The Goretex Parka
REI Co-op goretex parka, a brand founded in 1938 in Seattle who are still going strong, this dates from 1976 and is in the best shade of green ever, a colour you actually seldom see these days. I got this via the US and I like the fact it’s pretty rugged, I wonder who had it first and where they went in it before it ended up with me?
The Vintage Scarf
Daks Harris tweed vintage scarf, I’m a big fan of tweed, I got this for about six quid a few years back and it comes out every year. Close up it’s full of colour and works great with anything and smells a bit like old men’s pipes.
The Bobble Hat
The Casual Connoisseur Weir bobble hat, I actually designed these myself, based on old geeky seventies outdoor stuff, named after famous Scottish broadcaster Tom Weir, who loved the great outdoors and always wore a colourful hat. You either love them or hate them, they became something of a little cult and are sought after amongst a few people, they sold out in less than three weeks last year.
The Vinyl Jacket
Left Hand vinyl jacket, this dates from around the early 90’s and was a Massimo Osti brand which was originally not particularly well received during the heady days of his other cult labels Stone Island and CP Company, and fairly shortlived too, but went on to be one of the more cult brands amongst certain folk. I sold a lot of clobber of this ilk as I’ve kind of moved on from all that, but kept this as it’s still a really cool and innovative jacket, I like the subtle branding on this label, which is literally branded onto the sleeve.
The Ralph Lauren Shirt
Ralph Lauren madras shirt, I got this from the States, I’ve never been there, but it sounds better than saying I bought it from eBay, it’s got someone’s name stamped into the back of the neck, but look at it, it’s bright and beautiful. I’ve never actually worn it, perhaps I’m saving it.
The Chambray Shirt
R Newbold chambray shirt, because you always need a chambray shirt. This is a quality garment made in Japan, with a double collar feature so you can remove one for a Grandad collar if you so desired, it also has epaulettes which can button off and be used to button up the sleeves for that rolled up look, via buttons at the elbow on the inside.
