Jackets: My top 14

Posted: 27 September 2011
Tags: men's fashion

With summer coming to an end, I've delved into my wardrobe to bring you my favourite jackets. You might like some, you might not like some, but I like them and that's what counts.

Narnia's back there somewhere

Jackets are ace. You can put your wallet and keys in them to save unsightly bulges in your trousers. They keep you warm if it’s cold, they keep you dry if it’s wet and they keep you whatever not being affected by wind is when it’s windy. Most of all, they look pretty cool. Summer’s all very good but you don’t get to wear a jacket. Well, you can but people inevitably ask why you’re wearing a jacket. So in celebration of the ‘fast approaching’ jacket weather, here’s my top, ahem, fourteen from my very own wardrobe.

Norrøna Arktis Ano jacket

A great jacket this. You’re really meant to wear it over some kind of down layer but in winter it fits great over chunky knits. It also comes with all manner of fastenings and Velcro straps inside to keep everything in place. The fur trim is detachable and fits onto any other Norrøna jacket. It’s also made from wolf pelt, but a nasty wolf, not one of the nice ones. I got the jacket direct from the Norrøna website I don’t know how many years ago – I think because you couldn’t get them over here easily then – and a pal from over that way sent me the fur trim over a while later. The only other thing you need to know about this is that Ray Mears is a big fan. Well, that and it’s got the coolest logo around – a skiing viking.

Left hand jacket

This Left Hand jacket was an eBay purchase a good few years ago, before eBay became inhabited by idiots, but I remember it being something of a bargain. I had to do some repair work and sew some buttons back on – it’s a double breasted affair – and it came up as good as new. It’s the strange kind of vinyl that Osti used at the time so it can be a bit stiff and ’square’ but it looks ace and I’ve not seen another one. And that’s kind of the point isn’t it?

Barbour Cowen Commando jacket

My favourite Barbour jacket was made better with this lightweight summer version in sand. Wear it to the shops, the pub, the football or to put the bins out. I’ve worn it so much I recently had to sew the little elastic cuff bit back up after a minor brushing against my watch related tear. Loads of pockets, the Union Jack for the patriotic, and more press studs than in a press stood factory. Despite the Barbour overkill and the fashion stuff they’re doing now, I can still wear this and feel happy.

Prada Raccoon parka

I make absolutely no apologies for this parka. Yes it’s Prada, with whom I had a fling with in the early 2000s when they brought the Prada Sport stuff out. I bought some great knits and about four jackets. I had a great black Gore-Tex Prada jacket which ended up being used for work after I ripped the sleeve and then lost the detachable hood celebrating a goal in Burnley. I didn’t notice I’d lost the hood until I looked in a pub toilet mirror in a pub in Sowerby Bridge post piss after celebratory pint on the way back. Anyway, this parka is stuffed with goose feathers, has a GPS thingy in the sleeve that means if you’re buried in a snow drift men with dogs can find you, and yes, that’s proper real life raccoon fur! Probably had the most compliments from complete strangers and blokes that work in shops when I’ve worn this. “Where’d you get that from?” It was not cheap.

CP Light Jacket

This is a lovely jacket. It’s from the CP Urban Protection range circa 2000/2001 and yes, that is a torch. The normal little square Velcro CP logo patch comes off and with the aid of a Velcro loop and a metal hook you can attach a torch, so you can pretend to be a fireman or a bloke with a torch on his jacket. Loads of hidden pockets – for hiding stuff – and a huge pocket on the inside. Also a nice concealed hood. I was once nearly beaten up by some angry men pouring out of a pub in Brentford whilst wearing this, sadly I didn’t have the torch to fend them off with. I’ve still got the little booklet and box the torch comes in too.

Berghaus/Clerk&Teller Tweed Craic Jacket

Not everyone’s cup of tea this but I love it, though it does feel a bit short. A collaboration of the ticket tout’s favourite Berghaus and British label Clerk & Teller. It’s tweed which is good. Gets lots of comments from ladies, which is both unusual and positive, and there’s supposedly only 250 in the world. Which is even better.

CP linen jacket

This was a purchase from the shop on Beak Street a couple of summers back. It’s a sample and was in the sale so pretty much a bargain. It’s got the watch viewer from the Miglia (which ceased to be wearable years ago) and appears to have the sleeve pocket from an MA1 grafted onto it. It’s prefect for summer as being linen it’s incredibly light, and also looks quite smart.

Moncler Maya down jacket

Bought this this winter, as I didn’t have a short winter jacket, they were all big long parkas. They invented the down filled jacket and you can tell. Ok, it is a tad fashiony and probably not ideal for going up Ben Nevis, but if your stood on an open terrace in the fourth division with the sleet hammering down like stair-rods then it certainly keeps you warm and still looking fabulous, and you can still fit in the car in it on the way home.

Ma.Strum cross-dyed torch jacket

Not content with one jacket with a torch on it, I decided to invest in another. This is from Ma.Strum, who bear some relation – I can’t be arsed checking just what – to Massimo Osti and CP/Stone Island. They’ve used some of his original ideas and designs to create these jackets that are as good as SI and CP used to be. This looks stunning, especially when it’s rained on it! There’s a concealed hood, plenty of pockets, moveable or removable logo patches via press studs, and the torch is solar powered via a little clear window in the holder. I think this was the last jacket I bought. In the sale too, so got a fair whack off it.

CP corduroy jacket

This was another CP sale sample purchase, and yet another bargain. Ideal for looking like a geography teacher but you know all that already. Not much more I can say other than I think it’s great.

Left Hand Thermajoint jacket

I didn’t realise I’d picked quite so many Osti related jackets, oh well, I guess I just like his creations. This is another Left Hand jacket, made from the Thermajoint material that if memory serves me correct is supposedly nuclear proof or radiation proof or something. I don’t know about standing up to a nuclear winter, but it stands up to drizzle in North Bradford. Hopefully I never find out about the former.

Norrøna Forelhogna jacket

Quite possibly my favourite jacket ever. Bought, along with a cream Amundsen jacket, direct from Norrøna before I bought the Arktis. It’s Gore-Tex, the fit is superb. The quality is immense. It’s waterproof, rainproof, windproof, but unfortunately not cig proof as some knob on the dancefloor of Bar Fly in Camden proved when he bumped into me (yes of course I was wearing a Gore-Tex jacket inside on a dancefloor) leaving a little melty Gore-Tex patch. It’s got the ace logo subtly embroidered on the arm, it’s got more than enough toggles and zips, and to top it off, in one of the side pockets there’s a Norrøna branded glasses cleaning cloth on a cord that you can pull out and wipe your goggles with when you’re at the top of a mountain, or give your glasses a wipe so you can see the opposite goal when it’s raining away at Macclesfield.

6876 Capandula jacket

This is the original Capandula, and when I saw it on the 6876 website for the upcoming season I just had to have it. It just looked so good. I think I may have even rang Kenneth himself to try and track one down. Obviously wearing it you get asked where you’ve parked your trawler, but again, that’s kind of the point. Great big pockets in which to store your booty, though is is a tad stiff. Nevertheless I reckon it’s an all time classic.

CP tweed jacket

My final selection. Again, and I’m sorry about this, it’s another CP effort and it’s another sample sale job. There must be something about women and tweed, whereas most of the other jackets, and trainers for that matter, get comments from blokes, anything tweedy seems to draw comments from the ladies. Looks great teamed up with a pair of bootcut cords and a Barbour Country check shirt, fashion fans.

These are you best jackets?
11:24 pm, 31-Aug-2010Mark
Such a shame C&T died an all to soon death... but damn, their deathbed sale was good.

Love the barbour commando perfect for going the match.
12:50 pm, 1-Sep-2010Andrew Milligan
An excellent collection and good to see so many CP samples only get better with age
5:28 pm, 1-Sep-2010ffr
Ha! I remember when you got egged in that raccoon fur parka KW! And I never had you pegged as a Moncler man either.
6:01 pm, 1-Sep-2010Keith Wildman
I'd forgotten about that! Was just walking up to my mate's front door with him when were victims of a drive-by egging. Ever tried to get egg out of raccoon fur? It's bloody hard.
8:30 pm, 1-Sep-2010Adam
Holy Shit, I get trainers I do and your collection is pretty impressive but some of those jackets are horrific. I wouldn't clean my car with them and my car is shit.
8:39 pm, 1-Sep-2010Keith Wildman
You clean your car with jackets?
9:00 pm, 1-Sep-2010Danpiesley
WOW. Great stuff.
8:37 am, 2-Sep-2010Stainless
The Berghaus/Clerk&Teller is a cracker. You can't beat a nice tweed jacket.
9:59 pm, 2-Sep-2010Oneup.
The C&T's are great looking coats, but a little odd in the fit if you ask me.
9:30 am, 3-Sep-2010scousehouse
Have to agree with stainless the berghaus/clerk and teller is boss would love to have that bet that cost you a few quid keith?
11:19 am, 3-Sep-2010Keith Wildman
I actually bought the C&T from a mate, for (another) bargain amount. It does fit a bit funny, comes up a bit short and the arms feel long but it looks fine on.
2:31 pm, 3-Sep-2010Stainless
Sounds like you're wanting rid Keith. How much for P&P to Edinburgh? :)
4:24 pm, 3-Sep-2010aka
Those jackets are repulsive. Don't you ever feel that your attachment to Oasis might have impaired your taste?
5:59 pm, 3-Sep-2010Keith Wildman
Oasis? Not a fan I'm afraid. A poor man's Real People and Las.
9:31 am, 9-Sep-2010Ceri Williams
I'm seriously going to have to burglarize your house this winter. Don't worry, I'll leave the shiny puffa jacket so you don't get cold.
5:45 pm, 14-Sep-2010Sam Scribbler
Are the prices a secret?
6:21 pm, 14-Sep-2010Keith Wildman
No, I just can't remember what I paid for any of them.
12:26 pm, 28-Sep-2010E I G H T S
Excellent selection. The Thermajoint and Norrøna Arktis Ano are my picks of the bunch. I Serously regret not getting the yellow Capandula when I had the chance.
11:47 am, 1-Oct-2010griff
are you going to show us your varied range of vintage underpants in the next post?
1:16 pm, 1-Oct-2010Keith Wildman
Griff, well if there's enough demand for it.
1:22 pm, 1-Oct-2010griff
i would say go for it.
1:26 pm, 1-Oct-2010H
Millie unwearable!!! It's a classic mate as in timeless

8:24 pm, 1-Oct-2010sgr
wow! There can't be much room for a lady in your house!
12:25 am, 4-Oct-2010Martin Dewar
Do all the male writers in Sabotage just wear parkas, polo shirts, and running shoes?
12:29 am, 4-Oct-2010Keith Wildman
No. I like to wear a trouser of some description too.
8:16 am, 4-Oct-2010Sam Rowe
I like to incorporate socks every once in a while, otherwise the chaffing off the aforementioned running shoes can pinch a fair bit...

id prefer a trip down to famous army and navy stores for a peter storm kagoul or an argie parka , and if was feeling flush a trip to blacks for berghaus bubble .
10:08 pm, 6-Oct-2010Jugoya
My pithy posts, lost forever. Well, I'll say it again, have you been bothering the homeless to lend you their clothes again? Certainly look like the sort of clothing you see in the local 'charidy' shop. I think you've developed a genre all of your own "chavvy chic". Speaking if which did anyone read this from our lefty friends at the Guardian: http://m.guardian.co.uk/?id=102202&story=http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/oct/03/ask-hadley-why-wear-brand-names I can't quite place why but seems to have much resonance, no?
10:10 pm, 6-Oct-2010Jugoya
P.S. I've cut paste the above elsewhere should you, er, ahem, lose it,
11:30 pm, 6-Oct-2010Keith Wildman
Ace. I seem to have acquired my very own internet stalker, how flattering. That said, should you wish to discuss all matters sartorial without the anonymity of hiding behind an internet user name from afar, then I'll be in the Old Red Lion, by Underhill on Saturday from about half 2. Probably not too far from where you are. I'll be the one looking like a tramp.
6:52 am, 7-Oct-2010Jugoya
Can't do that for two reasons. I won't be in London and two, it's a fucking football pub! I'm sure you'll understand, the beautiful game is alright but not worth devoting Saturday afternoon too. Could meet for a coffee weekdays if you fancy. let's take it offline, James has my email. The venue I have in mind I'm sure you'll conside pincer but the coffee is great. Oh and Keith, this isn't a date alright ;)
11:24 am, 7-Oct-2010Keith Wildman
Seems I owe you an apology. I assumed you were a bloke, not a lass. Sorry.
12:28 pm, 7-Oct-2010jugoya
I like the thought of you wanting to meet a woman even if she is, as you term "your very own stalker". Ha ha ha. You remind me of Martin Freeman.
6:43 pm, 10-Oct-2010Ticsmon
Norrona and MA Strum are my faves among those Keith. Surprised you didn't put that Gucci effort up the one the Oldham lads called you a scruffy scouse twat in.
7:35 pm, 16-Nov-2010Roccia
Cowen Commando is the proverbial dog's b****cks... I've got the waxed winter version in DPM camo (wife 43rd b'day present). Awesome. Regards from Italy
9:13 pm, 23-Nov-2010ian
Nice capandula mate if ever you fancy a clear out i wouldnt mind first refusal
3:05 pm, 14-Feb-2011Jay Montessori
Wow can't believe the amount of shitbags who put up snide comments (not under their real name obviously)about a lads 15 fave jackets! Some nice bits there Keith and some not for me, but hey each to their own so keep the passion.
7:01 pm, 27-Sep-2011Whatever
Some nice jackets there but the phrase 'chunky knit' makes me want to vomit all over them.
7:20 pm, 27-Sep-2011One lug
No cabourn cameraman jacket??
7:23 pm, 27-Sep-2011CJ
another good article Keith, Not my type of wear but each to their own.
10:06 am, 28-Sep-2011kendalmintcake
Good shout KW, thought you'd have popped that Barbour dryfly in mind
2:48 pm, 28-Sep-2011Bob Shed
Bloody hell, if I added up everything i've ever spent on jackets in the last 40 years I bet it wouldn't come to 400 quid and the last one cost me 200. One jacket at a time for me, when it's worn out replace it.
3:02 pm, 28-Sep-2011Keith Wildman
If I had the Cameraman jacket it might be there, kept thinking of picking one up when they were in the sale but still a bit pricey. APC doing some nice stuff recently as are Nanamica and I like the look of the Cabourn Surface jacket.
4:21 pm, 29-Sep-2011Ad
You need to sell me that thermojoint it's too big for you.
4:51 pm, 29-Sep-2011Bob
Apart for the Moncler Maya down jacket I would have any if not all of them, very nice collection.
7:40 pm, 1-Oct-2011natasha
nice collection there..
1:47 pm, 3-Oct-2011Kenny
surely Millies are wearable again? last years leather one was ace
8:46 am, 7-Oct-2011Tony
Is this? serious. There are blokes who have more than one coat? Like.......girls?
2:36 pm, 18-Oct-2011Sack the Juggler
Nice collection, looking to add the lightweight commando to mine - are you a barnet fan or an everton fan? Confused cos you appear to be a scouser but you're in the wrong pub.
3:21 pm, 18-Oct-2011Keith Wildman
Bradford City. Stuart McCall gives me Everton leanings at a push though...
3:27 pm, 19-Oct-2011Sack the Juggler
Ahh - sorry - should have read your profile - Stuart McCall, top bloke, still remember him chesting the ball down and volleying it past Grobellar back in 89. Just picked up a secondhand cowen by the way - looks in decent nick, save it for the spring /summer now.
