Max Rushden's Favourite Football Shirt: Tottenham's Holsten Hummel Classic

The Football Shirt Collective: A Loving Home For Your Classic Kits

by Mike Maxwell
6 October 2012

With a growing collection of shirts and less chance to show them off, me and a couple of mates set up the Football Shirt Collective. Here's why you should get involved...

Got a classic Liverpool Crown Paints shirt? How’s about that yellow Arsenal JVC? What about a Manchester United cheese & onion Newton Heath number? Then you really should share it on the Football Shirt Collective…

Why did you set-up the FSC?

I started the Football Shirt Collective with two mates, Bobby and Rob. There was a sad predicament with my group of friends. We have all built up our football shirt collections over the years but don’t have many opportunities to wear them. As we have got older football shirts have become less socially acceptable to wear on a Saturday night and there are less and less football games to wear them in.

We wanted a place where people can take their shirts out of the cupboard or the attic and show them off to the world.

Each shirt has a story and brings back memories. We want to share them. It is amazing from our favourite football shirt features how many people remember their first football shirts and have stories about them.

When did you started collecting shirts?

My first shirt was the Arsenal home kit from the 1991 season. I was obsessed with Anders Limpar and watched the title winning video pretty much every weekend. As I grew up each season I would buy the Arsenal home or away kit but over time I gradually would get shirts from further a field. My first non-Arsenal shirt was an Argentina Batistuta shirt from the early 90s. I loved it. Great collar.

How many have you got?

Between Bobby, Rob and myself we have close to 500 shirts in our personal collections. In the Football Shirt Collective itself we have over 100 entries and counting.

What are the best ones you have received?

I think the best shirts we have received in the collective are either those that are outrageously bright or the ones with the best stories. In the bold category I love this season’s Nara Club shirt in Japan. Polka dots on a football shirt? What’s not to like. Another mention has to go to the 1996/7 Estonia shirt that @fifa209 provided. It is like a lairy tribute to the Aztecs.

On the story side I think @benjilanyado’s PSV shirt from 1991 is pretty special. It was from Bobby Robson’s first championship winning season with the Dutch club. Romario was banging in the goals but Robson fell out with him due to his “lifestyle” choices.

Best collections you’ve become aware of?

The most impressive collection has to be from @fifa209 who is collecting every FIFA national shirt. From Cape Verde through to the Democratic Republic of Congo he has got (or is getting them).

Got any good anecdotes about the shirts?

We get a lot of love for hummel kits on the collective. Max Rushden’s favourite shirt is the Tottenham hummel Holsten kit and Duncan Jenkins is the Denmark hummel kit, “When I was a kid I used to pretend to be Michael Laudrup in our back yard. Either him or Keith Houchen.”

Iain MacIntosh’s favourite was an old Brechin City shirt in the mid-90s, “The badge looked like it was a competition entry from a primary school and the material felt like a hot water bottle cover.”

The Besiktas 2003 shirt courtesy of @adamheath also deserves a mention. The shirt was designed to celebrate the Turkish clubs centenary and has the name of every Besiktas player – including Ronnie Johnson and Les Ferdinand - embossed in the pattern.

How can I share my kit?

If you have got a football shirt you would like to add to the collective let us know.

You can tweet us a photo of your favourite shirt @thefootballsc, upload them on facebook, or add them to our Pinterest board.

Don’t let is gather dust. Share your shirt with the world
