Why Pixar Must Never, Ever Make Toy Story 4

Pixar are probably the most consistently brilliant production company around today, but that doesn't mean they should risk tarnishing the legacy of their greatest work. Please guys, don't make Toy Story 4!

In the first Toy Story instalment we were introduced to Woody, Buzz and the gang and the concept of toy’s coming alive whilst children weren’t watching, as a child it was magical. The 2nd instalment could have easily been a stand alone film, the characters evolved and we were introduced to fresh faces, it was a great sequel. The final film of the trilogy was near perfect, it made the Toy Story franchise one of the most commercially and critically successful film series of all time. So why would Pixar make a 4th? Quite simply, they shouldn’t even consider it.

I was 7 when the first Toy Story was released, the perfect age to be engulfed by Pixar’s brilliantly simple idea. I have grown up with the films; they are my generation’s childhood, adolescence and maturity. The 3rd instalment released in 2010 was the perfect ending to Pixar’s jewel in the crown. It followed in the same vein as its predecessors, it was intelligent, funny but most importantly in my eyes it closed the curtain on the franchise in the most endearing fashion.

You can’t just keep draining the life out of characters film after film, in the end it’s only the kids who you can hear quietly giggling at the carbon copy scenarios of their once favourite characters

So why are there rumours of a 4th Toy Story? Obviously good or bad it would be a cash cow. There would be a new set of kids rushing to the cinemas to see Woody and Buzz once more, more merchandise, more action figures, more $$$$. Pixar don’t strike me as the type of company to potentially sacrifice their best franchise for an unnecessary 4th instalment but the rumours are growing and they seem to be going sequel crazy. Finding Nemo 2 and Monsters Inc 2 are both in the pipeline.  The vastly inferior Shrek franchise is just that because of DreamWorks inability to let go of it. You can’t just keep draining the life out of characters film after film, in the end it’s only the kids who you can hear quietly giggling at the carbon copy scenarios of their once favourite characters. Pixar did leave the audience with the notion of a 4th film with the toy’s finding their way to a new owner but just because the franchise is open to it doesn’t mean they should go through with it. It’s true that the story is with the likes of Woody and Buzz but it is also with Andy. The tear jerking finale worked so well because subconsciously we were following Woody and Andy’s friendship, even with Andy barely featuring in the trilogy.

Its difficult enough to make one great film let alone 2 or 3 in the same series, the Lion King was brilliant, does anyone remember the sequel? The latter Shrek films are blurred into one. Cars 2 was poor and it’s going to be difficult to make a credible Finding Nemo sequel. The market is difficult; the kids will keep on watching and buying but sometimes at the expense of good filmmaking etiquette. Pixar have made 3 outstanding Toy Story films that appeal to both children and adults.

So they can take Nemo out of the water, move The Incredibles in Benidorm even give Ratatouille a career change but leave the Toy Story franchise alone, its one of the best trilogies of all time.

It would be an absolute travesty, although I can't help but feel that the third film sealed the fate - I wrote this at the time: http://jordanwaller.tumblr.com/post/963963542/why-they-should-never-make-another-toy-story-movie-im#.UBZMwHJSTCo
