Alireza Jahanbakhsh: The Iranian Winger Man United Are Desperate For

Iran stand just weeks away from their fourth World Cup finals - and one player who will be looking to make his mark on the global stage is NEC Nijmegen’s tricky winger, Alireza Jahanbakhsh.

The 2012 Iranian Football Federation Young Player of the Year has already followed the path well-trodden by countrymen Ali Daei, Javad Nekounem and Mehdi Mahdavakia by bagging a deal in Europe, and has quickly adapted to life on the continent.

Tearing Eredivisie defences to shreds since his move from Damash in the summer, the 20 year old has both flammability and financial sense: pace to burn and skills to pay the bills.

One club that is likely watching the emergence of Jahanbakhsh closely is Manchester United. It is no secret that David Moyes is in search of a pacey, dynamic winger following the failure of Wilfried Zaha to make an impression at Old Trafford - and he has been eyeing Real Soceidad’s Antoine Griezmann of late.

But with PSG and Arsenal also amongst the frontrunners for the Frenchman’s £25 million signature, the Old Trafford side might struggle to convince him to move to the north west, particularly if they fail to secure Champions League football - a dim prospect which appears ever more likely.

Moyes has a £200 million war-chest to delve into over the summer, and fans are expecting him to max out that club credit card - but if the unthinkable happens, and United are faced with no continental football next campaign, they may need to search a little deeper under the radar.

The up and coming Jahanbakhsh certainly fits that bill, and of course, his current national team manager, Carlos Quieroz, is well-connected in Manchester, having spent five years working as Fergie’s number two.

Jahanbakhsh will be well aware that if he can continue his sparkling form and put in some more eye-catching performances in Brazil, the tournament could be his big break - and he could well join his international team mate, Fulham’s Ashkan Dejagah, on these shores in the near future.
