Ki-Sung Yeung: What Swansea City Can Expect From The Celtic Star

Swansea City have been snooping around the Korean Scholes; Michael Laudrup would be foolish not to move for Celtic's star midfield man...

He’s been running the show in midfield for Celtic for the last two seasons, but Swansea City are now interested in buying him.  Here’s why…

Consistency is a popular word in the unique vernacular of football. As parlance it holds both negative and positive connotations. A player can be dubbed consistently bad as quickly as they can be praised for turning in solidly consistent performances. When used in such a way to positively to describe a player it is often one of the subtlest but most worthy accolades that can be given, particularly if the team they’re playing in is consistently poor.

This was the position Ki Sung-Yeung found himself in during Celtic’s early season bout of inexplicable collywobbles and erratic form.

Amid the embarrassing defeats, the media frenzy over Neil Lennon’s job and the general hand wringing and gnashing of teeth that follow a few defeats in the SPL, ‘Ki’ was the model of consistent brilliance. Unflappable under pressure, very assured, always committed and undoubtedly talented. He quietly got on with the job in hand whilst others around him lost form and belief, and the Hoops duly got their hands on the title

A solid passer of the ball, he excels particularly in those fast, low, long range diagonal balls from deep midfield onto the flanks. Usually timed to perfection to beat the offside trap they would give the likes of Dyer and Michu a chance to run onto the ball, giving them a valuable yard or two on opposition fullbacks.

He’ll also comfortably break up play and put some tackles in; he has coped with the rigours of playing in the middle against the likes of Kilmarnock and Dunfermline without being bullied off the park. He’ll add an option in the set pieces too with a decent, accurate delivery of corners and free kicks.

Unflappable under pressure, very assured, always committed and undoubtedly talented.

More importantly for Rangers fans is the fact that at the age of 23 there is still a huge amount of potential for the future with Ki. Bearing in mind he has already amassed an astonishing total of 45 International caps with South Korea, including appearances at the 2010 World Cup, where he played in all his countries matches before losing in the semis to Uruguay.

Alongside various successes with FC Seoul in his native South Korea and winning the Scottish Cup with Celtic he has also won various impressive awards including Asian Young Footballer of the Year 2009, SPL Young Player of the Month October 2010 and South Korean Footballer of the Year 2011.

As a Celtic fan, I’d be gutted to see Ki go. However, if he is to leave then there could be a no more worthy destination for him than the Premier League; it’s a move that would see him develop from a dependable and talented player with great potential to a true world-class consistent performer. After all, they don’t call him ‘The Korean Scholes’ for nothing.

Running the show?? dont think so mate..Ki is a player who excels against inferior teams but one who goes missing when the going gets tough (except one game v Rangers at Ibrox) Celtic should cash in on this overhyped enigma sooner rather than later

bv 3:19 pm, 3-Aug-2012

Ki is hardly a first tem player and is too weak for the phyical side of the Scottish game. With Brown, Ledley, Wanyama & Kayal we have more than enough to win the league. I would sell Ki for anything over £5 million and sign another striker

MD 3:35 pm, 3-Aug-2012

Ki is much underrated by most of the Celtic support, we should build our team around him. He'd be the perfect regista behind Wanyama and Ledley, particularly in tough European away fixtures.

bv, with reference to your comment, you could sell pretty much all your midfield at present and still win the scottish title due to there being no Rangers in there and if im right bookies only taking bets on the title without celtic.

Martin M 10:20 am, 4-Aug-2012

He got a lock in his locker and would easily fit into any of Europe's top sides. Quality player.

Kev C 9:55 pm, 6-Aug-2012

All the above comments are true of Ki,but he could be huge if he was to join QPR in the PL!!! Saying that if they offer £6-7m for him snap their hands off!!! The player i would't to lose to Man Utd is Wanyama now there is a class act!!!

The guys' racist monkey taunt at Japan in the Asia cup really put me off him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlVChlS5fGY&feature=related He has some talent but with that kind of attitude no thankyou.

I hate the media 12:23 pm, 8-Aug-2012

he's called the "korean gerrard" or "dave" he's a good player but he's been in and out of the side. you're not a celtic fan you're just a media man trying to be popular.

iBhoy 1:34 pm, 8-Aug-2012

"More importantly for Rangers fans" - eh?

Elchappy 7:55 pm, 8-Aug-2012

Ha ha - we talking about the same player? I am a Celtic fan and if we can get £6m+ the happy days. PS he is often referred to the South Korean Gerrard - not Scholes !

renf 11:39 pm, 8-Aug-2012

hey fner how much are getting paid to troll Ki articles? i'm only getting 300 a week, how much does your agency pay?

fner 7:02 am, 17-Aug-2012

Oppan gang nam style

Jake 12:18 pm, 21-Aug-2012

Very talented player with lots more potential still to be realised. Unfortunately not entirely suited to Celtic's style of play - domestically we normally play pushed right up to the edge of the opposition penalty box trying to break down a packed defence with short quick passes and lots of movement. Ki is better suited to a slower tempo where he can sit deep and spread long passes around the pitch. I hope the Hoops have agreed a sell-on clause becuase I suspect he'll be moving on from Swansea for a big fee within a couple of seasons.

Brianbhoy 1:17 pm, 21-Aug-2012

£6m. Great business. he only played half last season!!! Well done Celtic in talking him up!!!! Good job Lenny. He is good. Could be very good, but will not get a game in the Celtic midfield in any case. Watch for Dylan McGeough. Now that is a player already at 19. he will be huge!

Robert 10:29 am, 22-Aug-2012

are you having a laugh. Swansea are far superior to Celtic. You really believe that Ledley, Commons & Hopper are Premiership quality.

Kev C 3:29 pm, 22-Aug-2012

Robert-tell you what Hoopers a way better striker than andy carroll at liverpool.Out scored him every season since they left their last clubs!! And anyway the 3 playes you name-checked will be playing Champions League football, any Swansea say that?

Russ 1:58 am, 30-Aug-2012

Not sure Champions league is a good indication of how good teams are, TNS play in it. Besides, Celtic will get worse now that Rangers have been relegated. All their players will move to a league where winning the title is actually a challenge. Meanwhile Swansea will continue to maintain their good form in the prem thanks to a board that is committed to developing the club without selling it to some super sheikh. I'd also like to point out that Joe Ledley is extremely overrated. (speaking as a Welshman who has seen him play on numerous occasions)

Kev C 6:07 pm, 30-Aug-2012

Russ-i mean they'll be playin the league stages of the Champions League, and not just the 1st 2nd round games...Christ Motherwell played in they games too,and TNS are better than Well!!! And how will we get worse not playing rangers..we only played them twice a season!!! We're playing Barcelona twice!!!! Much better than that lot across the city, would't you say?

Russ 7:27 pm, 30-Aug-2012

Put it this way, if I was a Celtic player I'd want to go somewhere where I played decent teams every week rather than two games against Barcelona. You may have only played Rangers twice a season but you were still competing with them for the majority of the season in terms of points so it's hardly the same scenario. Anyway, it's not as if Celtic actually have a chance of winning the Champions league so why does it matter whether they're in the first round or the groups, they're still only there to make up the numbers and get a load of dosh.
