United need some real quality at the back, and they don't come much better than this fella...

Louis Van Gaal has not even been officially named as the new Manchester United manager yet, but it appears that his elite European connections are already coming good for the Old Trafford side.

The Dutch national team boss, who is set to be announced in his new role in the next day or two, has already been on the trail of Borussia Dortmund’s defensive stalwart, Mats Hummels - and wants to rebuild his new team around the German star.

At 25, the player is at the perfect age to shore up the Reds’ ailing backline - and with Nemanja Vidic already packing his bags, and Rio Ferdinand looking increasingly less likely to hang around in the north west, he would inject some real composure, experience and exuberance into van Gaal’s side.

Of course, there are plenty of clubs sniffing around the lad, who has 28 caps for his country, but van Gaal has the advantage of being close to Hummels from his time at Bayern Munich - and has already admitted that he regrets selling the centre half to Dortmund some six years ago. Perhaps we could see a double swoop for Hummels, and his Dortmund teammate Marco Reus?

His capture would certainly be an eye-catching one for United, and though he would come at a price - £30 million, to be exact - that’s not THAT expensive for a world class defender, is it?

(Side note: Hummels is very handsome and would definitely rectify the side’s handsome deficit since Phil Jones’ arrival)

Great player, would be better served in the backline alongside Gary Cahill than any of United's slugs though.
