Bizarrely, despite Louis van Gaal’s incredible record and imminent arrival at Old Trafford, there appears to be an increasing clamour for anyone else to become manager - Giggsy, Ancelotti, Simeone, Margaret the Tea Lady.

But it’s not just the fans who are unsure about the appointment of the fiery Dutchman. A spit-soaked dummy hit the floor in a big way this week, as Wayne Rooney put two and two together, and realised that van Gaal’s close relationship with Robin van Persie could mean that the Englishman finds himself frozen out next season.

Again. Let’s face it, Rooney has endured a turbulent few years at Old Trafford, and despite having secured himself a £300,000 per week contract despite looking far from his best, he’s still not happy - and has apparently been to the Man United board to ask them to reconsider.

Of course, he is right about one thing. Van Gaal and RVP do have a ‘special bond’ (not sure why I put that in air quotes, as it makes it seem much more sinister than it is), and the rumour around the club is that if Rooney keeps whining then he’ll turn up at Carrington training ground one day to find his Etch-a-Sketch, Stereophonics album and colouring book bagged up and left outside the door.

But no need to worry, United fans. His exit could be the perfect scenario - as the massive weight that would lift off the wage bill (not to mention the sofa in the club common room) could easily finance a move for PSG’s wantaway Uruguayan Edinson Cavani.

The striker, who is pretty ace, let’s face it, has been linked with a move to either United or Chelsea for a few months now, but his huge wages appear to be a sticking point - for now.
